The lighting of the Independence Flame at Zezani Assembly Point carries profound national significance. It represents far more than a ceremonial act, it stands as a powerful symbol of Zimbabwe’s liberation heritage, unity, resilience, and enduring commitment to freedom. Zezani holds deep historical importance as one of the assembly points where freedom fighters from ZIPRA and ZANLA gathered following the ceasefire, marking a critical turning point in Zimbabwe’s transition from armed struggle to independence.

In his keynote address, the Vice President highlighted that the flame represents the enduring spirit of the liberation struggle, the courage, sacrifice, and determination of the men and women who fought tirelessly for Zimbabwe’s freedom

The ceremony also underscored the importance of preserving and honouring Zimbabwe’s liberation history. The Zezani Assembly Point Memorial stands as a lasting tribute to the sacrifices made and serves as a reminder of the responsibility placed on current and future generations to protect and uphold the nation’s independence and unity.

From Zezani, the Independence Flame proceeds to Beitbridge, passing through key points including the Municipality, Old Border, Mbedzi, Lutumba, and Malala Business Centre before continuing to Gwanda Town. The journey continues through Gwanda District, passing through Manama Mission and other communities, symbolically carrying the spirit of independence across the province.

The Flame then travels through Insiza District, moving through Avoca, Silalatshani, Filabusi, Khayanyama, Nkankezi, Skuta, and surrounding centres. It proceeds through Umzingwane District, passing through Sezhube, Mbalabala, Mawabeni, Habane, Ntabende, and Plumtree.

The roadshow also covers Bulilima and Mangwe districts, reaching communities such as Masendu, Madlambudzi, Tshitshi, and Brunapeg before heading into Matobo District. Within Matobo, the route includes St Josephs, Nyongolo, Maphisa, Kezi, Natisa, and Chapo. On 17 April, the second lighting of the Independence Flame will be officiated by Vice President Dr. K.C.D. Mohadi at Ratanyana.

The journey culminates on 18 April 2026 with the Independence Flame Run to Maphisa Stadium, where the main Independence Day celebrations will be held. The flame will stand as a powerful symbol of unity, sacrifice, and the enduring spirit of freedom.

This nationwide movement of the Independence Flame serves as both a tribute to the liberation struggle and a celebration of national unity, inclusivity, and shared development under the guiding principle of leaving no one and no place behind.
