Domboshava, Friday 23 January 2026

Ngomakurira National Monument in Domboshava, under the custodianship of Chief Chinamora, played host to a landmark heritage and community development event on Friday, 23 January 2026, bringing together institutions, traditional leadership, and the local community in a shared commitment to heritage preservation.

The event was led by NMMZ in partnership with Reghardt Learning Center, which made a significant contribution to the site through the donation and official handover of a solar-powered borehole,  a new ablution block and refuse bins. These interventions were delivered under the theme “Huchapa Miswa, Usatifendere paNhaka Yedu – Our Heritage, Our Pride.” Speaking on behalf of the institution, Mrs Sibanda, Director of Reghardt Learning Center, emphasized that safeguarding heritage sites begins with practical action, environmental responsibility, and active community participation.

The newly commissioned solar-powered borehole and ablution block are critical additions that enhance sanitation, improve visitor experience, and support sustainable tourism at Ngomakurira National Monument. The infrastructure directly contributes to the broader mandate of keeping heritage sites clean, functional, and resilient while reducing environmental impact through renewable energy use.

The event was well attended by the surrounding community and key stakeholders, including Makumbe Heights College, local councillors, traditional leaders and community members from the Chinamora area. Their participation reflected strong local ownership and shared responsibility in the protection of cultural heritage.

The National Museums and Monuments of Zimbabwe (NMMZ) was represented by both executive and regional staff, reaffirming its commitment to collaborative heritage management. Also present was Mr Chris Venturas, a valued partner of NMMZ in initiatives promoting cleanliness and environmental conservation at Ngomakurira.

Addressing the gathering, Board of Trustees member and Chairman of the Northern Region Local Committee, Cde Parerenyatwa, the Deputy Executive Director, Mr Darlington Munyikwa, and the Regional Director for NMMZ, Mr Bvocho, expressed appreciation for the initiative. They highlighted the importance of partnerships in heritage preservation, community development, and the promotion of sustainable tourism, noting that clean and well-managed sites strengthen both cultural identity and local economic opportunities.

The event was further enlivened by entertainment from renowned artist Tocky Vibes, whose performance added cultural vibrancy and reinforced the message of pride, identity, and respect for Zimbabwe’s heritage. His presence underscored the role of arts and culture in mobilising communities around heritage conservation.

In his concluding remarks, Chief Chinamora emphasized the growing importance of rural tourism in the Chinamora area, citing its vast mountain ranges that host both significant heritage sites and exceptional scenic landscapes. He also outlined the dos and don’ts of accessing Ngomakurira National Monument, stressing respect for sacred spaces, environmental protection, and adherence to traditional and conservation protocols.

The event concluded on a strong note of unity, partnership, and shared purpose, reinforcing the principle that heritage preservation is a collective responsibility. Through initiatives such as these, Ngomakurira National Monument continues to stand as a symbol of Zimbabwe’s living heritage, protected, respected, and proudly owned by its people.
